With the recent credit crunch hitting all of us the gang at Stafford247 are on a mission to help you (& us) look after the pennies!! Everything seems to have gone up in price recently & we need to economise so if you’re on a budget then Home Bargains is definitely worth a visit! Everything from toiletries & beauty products to home & garden items, cleaning products to books & toys it’s all there & at really good prices too! I recently went on the hunt for some shampoo & conditioner & was amazed to find “Tresemme” a well known salon brand in a special offer pack at £3.75-that’s for shampoo & conditioner! I checked one of the high street shops & discovered that I had basically got a BOGOF! (That’s Buy One Get One Free for those of you that aren’t familiar with bargain hunting jargon!) I usually pay up to £4 for facial wipes but found some Spa Wipes at £1 for 2 packets, ok so they weren’t a brand I had heard of but they did the job & were great VFM! (Value For Money!) Home Bargains also sells a selection of groceries, mainly tinned & non-perishable goods but also breakfast cereals, crisps, tea & coffee plus a huge selection of sweets, chocolate & biscuits!! Most of these are top brands but do check the sell by date on any food items you buy. So, the next time your purse strings are feeling the strain head down to Home Bargains for all your essentials!!

The Country Larder is an Aladdin’s Cave of fresh, homemade goods-fruit & veg cheeses, breads, cakes, preserves & more!! On our recent trip to Trentham we stopped off to take a look around The Country larder! Admittedly the prices are higher than you would find in your local supermarket but if you’re looking for something different or a special treat then this is the store for you! We had a good look at everything before filling our basket! We chose: 3 homemade pies-Corned Beef & Onion £2.75 Steak & Ale Gravy £1.39 Chicken & Mushroom £1.39 A box of Cheese Nuggets £1.54 A 200g pack of Chocolate Chip Cookies £1.65 A Natural Choice Liquorice Log (for Steve!) 70p The grand total was £9.42 & we felt that for the quality of goods it wasn’t too unreasonable but of the proof of the pudding is in the eating so we’d have to wait & see! There is also an excellent selection of wines, beers & ciders, speciality teas & health products, gift ideas & household products. We were happy with everything we’d bought-the pies were delicious as were the cookies (which didn’t last very long!) the cheese nuggets went down well at a get together & Steve thoroughly enjoyed his liquorice!! We definitely could have bought more & will make a point of popping in next time we’re in Trentham!

As a self-confessed handbag-aholic I couldn’t resist a quick peek in that department! Again there is so much choice & I literally had to drag myself away!

My mission today was to find something gorgeous for my equally as gorgeous 10 month old niece! The selection of children’s clothes is equally as good & I knew it was time for a good old rummage! After umming & aahing over various party frocks & pretty summer dresses I eventually found the perfect thing! An unbelievably cute long sleeved top in baby pink with “Wannabe Princess” printed over a silver tiara-very appropriate & a snip at £5.99! (RRP £18!) On my way to the cash desk I did a quick detour to the shoes! I wasn’t looking for anything pretty, more like sturdy & comfy! In no time I had found just what I wanted, a pair of walking shoes by Regatta-a well known maker of outdoor clothing- at the bargain price of £16.99. (RRP £50!) They were good & comfy, in nice neutral colours & also waterproof, which will be a bonus when I’m trudging over Doxey Marshes! TK MAXX is a great store & is likely to have whatever you’re looking for-just make the time to browse!!

Nowadays its all too easy to get our fresh ingredients from the supermarkets. With their fresh meat counters especially, the traditional local butcher can easily get forgotten. At Stafford247 we believe it’s really important to support the local independent traders as much as possible! For a family get together I decided to make a nice hearty beef casserole but I didn’t want to get my beef from the supermarket this time! So off I went in search of a good old fashioned butcher! I decided to try Beez Butchers on Greyfriars in Stafford, they have an excellent choice of meats & fresh sausages & also bacon & cheese! They also cater for vegetarians offering meat substitutes & in the summer you can buy all your BBQ essentials too! I was given a friendly welcome as I got to the counter-always a good start-& placed my order! I was feeding 4 hungry people so I needed a substantial amount of beef &, with the help of the butcher, decided that 1½ lbs would be enough! I also bought 4 rashers of smoked back bacon & ½ dozen eggs (Sunday morning brekkie!).The grand total for all this quality fresh food was £6.20-excellent V.F.M.! The beef was delicious & went down very well in my casserole, the bacon was equally as good & along with the eggs made a cracking (no pun intended!) Sunday breakfast treat! I felt that the quality of produce that I bought was superb & all for under £7! I will definitely use Beez Butchers again & I would encourage everyone to do the same & support your local butcher!
