Pubs & Clubs

The Swan Inn.

18 Stafford St,Stone, ST15 8QW, Tel 01785 815570

Stafford 247 Says:

These days it can be hard to find a good traditional pub, there are more chain pubs than you can shake a stick at & even though they are popular they can feel soulless & without character.
On a recent trip to Stone the weather took a turn for the worse & shelter & refreshment was required! The Swan Inn is a good old fashioned & traditional pub with a great selection of real ales & inviting open fire-just the ticket!
We were greeted with a friendly smile & although it wasn’t busy we got the feeling that it was a popular place.

Steve went to the bar & ordered our drinks. I was in the mood for a Guinness & obviously Steve stuck with cider & after a little sample he asked for a pint of Black Rat Cider from Moles Brewery. A half pint of Guinness was £1.35 & a pint of Black Rat Cider was £2.50. I don’t really need to tell you about the Guinness except that it was as good as you’d expect (if you like Guinness that is!). The cider was of the traditional cloudy type, a good golden colour with a subtle apple flavour & a little fizz.

There is quite a reasonable selection of wines too with a good choice of reds, whites & roses, starting at £2.45 for 175ml, £3.20 for 250ml or £9.50 for a bottle (prices apply to all wine).
Most pubs nowadays offer food & The Swan Inn is no exception-however the choice is small. If you are peckish though baps are available with a choice of fillings: Tuna Mayo, Ham, Cheese & Onion & Egg Mayo all at £1.50, Pork Pies at £1.30 & Steak Pies also at £1.50 or £1.75 if you want gravy!
The emphasis at The Swan Inn seems to be on the real ales & their live entertainment-a refreshing change from alcopops & Sky Sports!

Palmer’s.

35 Crabbery St, Stafford, ST16 2BA, Tel 01785 605605 LOCATION!

Stafford 247 says...

Palmer’s can be found in one of Stafford’s oldest & most famous buildings! Originally called the ‘Noah’s Ark’ it was visited by royalty & a sadistic serial killer!
In 1575 Queen Elizabeth II supped wine here & later in the 19th Century it was frequented by a certain Dr William Palmer. This infamous serial killer poisoned two of the landladies who also just happened to be his wife & mother-in-law!

This lovely building stood proud but empty throughout the 90’s until 1999 when it became The Surgery, & now in January 2008 it has been given a makeover & a new very appropriate name!
Original features are still in place-wooden beams & the beautiful stone bay windows. These are complemented well by the choice of décor & furnishings, wooden tables & chairs & comfy leather sofas. Even the bar has been designed in such a way as to not spoil the character of the building.

Casa.

We were given a warm & friendly welcome when we visited Palmer’s recently for a lunchtime drink. Steve had his usual-a pint of Strongbow at £2.55 & I opted for a Mocha (½ coffee ½ chocolate) at £1.90. Food is also available in the form of Sandwiches & Paninis, fairly basic but with a good choice of fillings.
Palmer’s has the potential to be a popular place to meet friends & chat or just chill out…& maybe an encounter with their resident ghost, apparently he’s quite playful!!!

1 Bridge St, Stafford, ST16 2HJ, LOCATION!

Stafford 247 says...

The building which once housed the Wimpy is now being used to its full potential & Stafford has its own little bit of Spanish style in Casa!

We visited Casa not long after it opened in December 2007 & were immediately struck by its modern & stylish décor, not to mention its equally as impressive layout! On the ground floor there is a huge Piazza & on the 1st floor a lovely balcony & terrace. Downstairs also has plenty of tables for dining which is what we were planning on when we paid our second visit to Casa!

IMG_0476
IMG_0467

The menu is fairly comprehensive-for quick bites there are salads, sandwiches, paninis & jacket potatoes with a good selection of fillings & for the hungrier Stone baked pizzas from £5, Pasta dishes like Spaghetti & Meatballs at £4.75.
Wanting a light lunch we went for a Jacket Potato with Prawns in a Marie Rose sauce at £3.75 & a Casa Panini at £4.95.

The potato was a good size & filled with a generous dollop of Prawns in the creamy sauce, very tasty, it was polished off in no time along with the accompanying salad!
The Casa Panini was also delicious, lightly toasted & packed with mozzarella, spicy Chorizo sausage & fresh tomatoes, served with tortilla chips & salad.
To wash it all down Steve had a pint of Strongbow at £2.90 & I tried a nice smooth Footsteps Chardonnay at £3.95.
Casa also offers Tapas from 5pm, ideal for post-work get togethers.
Stafford247 verdict: For good food in cool surroundings Casa esplendido!!

Stafford247 Says:

Catch Corner is a popular family Pub & Restaurant with a Wacky Warehouse play area for the kids! Décor is in the traditional pub style, nothing fancy but is clean & tidy. Staff can be seen bustling around clearing & cleaning tables which is a good sign in my opinion!

There is a large “L” shaped bar & food can be ordered from the aptly named “Food Order Point” at one end.

Talking of food the menu has plenty of choice & is fairly reasonably priced. Choose from Traditional favourites such as Fish & Chips at £7.25 or Steak & Ale Pie at £7.95. There’s also a selection of starters including Breaded Mushroom Dippers at £2.95 & Soup of the Day at £2.15.

Also available are Burgers, Grills & a choice of Roasts on Sundays. For those of you with smaller appetites a selection of main dishes can be served as a half portion.

If you’re not completely stuffed then try one of the puds on offer! Choose from a classic Bramley Apple Pie at £2.65 or a luscious Baked Vanilla Cheesecake also at £2.65. The Children’s menu has a handy nutritional guide on the back so you can keep track of how much salt & sugar your little ‘uns are getting. There’s a reasonable choice for kids from the usual Burgers & Sausages to Creamy Chicken Curry at £3.15 or Sweet & Sour Chicken also at £3.15.

There’s quite a good wine list too with a decent range of reds & whites plus a couple of rosès & sparkling wines thrown in for good measure! Prices range from £9.25 for a bottle of Jacob’s Creek Chardonnay (£3.45 for 250ml) or Monte Clavijo Rioja at £9.25 a bottle (£3.45 for 250ml).

When we visited on weekday evening the place was quite busy & although we had to wait at the bar for a while they did apologise. We chose just to enjoy a drink on this occasion, my other half went his usual pint of Strongbow at £2.62 & I chose a glass of Pinot Grigio Minini at £3.45 for 250ml (£9.25 a bottle).

If you want a romantic dinner for two then this eatery may not be for you, however for a family meal whatever the occasion Catch Corner is ideal!!

Guest Review by Chris & Eve:

The Yard is Stafford’s newest watering hole! Inside is spacious with plenty of seating & a long bar.

Choose from one of the tall tables or a booth with comfy seats, it’s a great place for large groups of people to meet but also has plenty of places for cosy couples.

We went on a busy Saturday lunchtime & decided to sample the food on offer! The Yard has a good sized & varied menu with a choice of Burgers, Sandwiches, Platters & traditional favourites.

We tried the Steak Pie with Chips & Peas at £5.45 & the Chicken & Ham Carbonara at £6.75. The Steak Pie was good, a nice short crust pastry with plenty of gravy inside. It could have done with a bit more meat but very enjoyable anyway!

The Carbonara was nicely presented & was served on a separate dish from the Tagliatelle, & came with a salad garnish & two fair sized slices of Garlic Bread.

It was very tasty, with lots of Chicken, Ham & Mushrooms. I would have liked a bit more sauce but it was very good just the same!

We left not long after finishing our meals as it started to get very busy, but we really enjoyed our food & wouldn’t hesitate to eat at The Yard again!

Stafford247 Says:

The Star is a beautiful traditional pub situated on the canalside in Stone, & is a popular stop off point for narrowboat owners as well as locals & out-of-towners!

Inside, the pub has original features, wood beams, wood floors etc & also has a separate dining area although you can choose to eat in the bar area. Food is available from 12pm-2.30pm & 5pm-9pm daily (8pm on Sundays).

The menu isn’t elaborate but is good traditional pub grub! Choose from Sandwiches, Wraps & Baguettes from £1.95 for a Chip “Buttie”, Jacket Spuds from £3.25 & a selection of Light Bites, Pastas, Salads & Grills. Among the main courses are Meat & Potato Pie at £6.25 & Scampi & Chips at £5.95.

From Monday to Saturday between 12pm & 7pm you can get 2 meals for £7, great value for money & all day Roasts are available for £5.50. There’s also a good selection of puds & ice-creams all at £2.95.

I went for the Tuna Melt at £3.25, a lovely crunchy baguette topped with lots of Tuna Mayo & smothered in melted cheese. It was served with a side salad & Tortilla chips. An enjoyable snack & again good value for money!

The service is friendly & informal helping to create a nice relaxed atmosphere.

The location of this lovely pub is a big plus, you can sit outside on a lovely summer’s day & enjoy a drink while watching the barges go by, although on a cold & rainy Saturday in January it was lovely & cosy inside!!
