This locally run coffee shop is tucked away in a part of Stafford that you might not expect! Located on the Madford Retail Park off Foregate Street, The Coffee Cellar is very popular with surrounding businesses & people passing through on their way Wickes DIY or Curry’s!
The most prominent feature of this café is it’s use of Fairtrade goods, All the coffees, teas & Hot chocolate are all Fairtrade (even the sugar!)

The Coffee Cellar
Chicken, Bacon & Mayo Wrap.

I ventured in on a Saturday lunchtime & was met with a long queue to the counter! For some this be annoying but I felt it should be a good sign! Fortunately service at The Coffee Cellar is efficient & I wasn’t kept waiting long. I chose a Chicken, Bacon & Mayo Wrap at £2.15 which was prepared in front of me. The filling-a pre-prepared yet fresh mix of Chicken, Bacon & Mayo- was generously spread over the tortilla & topped with fresh salad the swiftly folded to form the familiar wrap. I thought it was quite nice to see it being put together as you usually only get to see the end result!

Even though it was a hot day I couldn’t resist sampling one of the coffees on offer! Now you might think that would be a simple choice, but not at The Coffee Cellar! First choose your size- small(8oz), medium(12oz), or large(16oz) then your style- Cappucino, Latte, Americano or Mocha. I went for a medium Cappucino & was then faced with yet another choice, this time what strength- mild, medium or strong! I decided to play safe & went for medium as I didn’t want to be awake at 3am!!
The wrap & coffee came to £3.60 & now it was time to test the V.F.M. (Value for Money for those of you who don’t know!) I settled myself down in one of the comfier looking chairs at the back of the shop & tucked into my snack!

The wrap was tasty & as I said generously filled with plenty of chicken & bacon & just the right amount of salad. As well as wraps you can also choose from white or multi-grain baguettes, sandwiches on white or malted bread & hoagie rolls, these range in price from £2.05 to £2.20. Also available are Paninis from £2.35, Salad boxes from £1.55, Jacket Potatoes from £1.60 & Nachos from £2.00.

Coffee Cellar seating area

Fancy a breakfast treat? Oatcakes & toast are served until 10.30am.
As I sipped my delicious Cappucino (complete with chocolate sprinkles!) I sat back & took in my surroundings. Although the place isn’t huge there’s a fairly good choice of seating including comfy sofas to high tables & chairs, décor is light & arty photos adorn the walls. Whilst looking around I noticed that they also sell an impressive choice of coffee beans & again these are Fairtrade. There’s a specials board too which is updated weekly.
The staff are polite & helpful, & I overheard a gentleman asking about Crayfish as he wasn’t sure if he liked it. The lady behind the counter offered him a free sample to try & I thought this was very good customer service!
The Coffee Cellar ticks a lot of boxes-value, service & most of all choice. It’s busy & bustling & I’m sure it will go from strength to strength!

Stafford247 Says:

This fantastic little tea shop is a real hidden treasure! Situated in between shops in the beautiful village of Penkridge, Dickens of a Tea Shoppe boasts an impressive & amusing menu! Choose from “David Copperfields Sandwich Bar” from £2.95 or “Mr Bumble’s Baguettes” from £3.95. If you fancy something a bit more substantial then go for one of “Mr Pickwick’s Piping Hot Meals” like Lasagne at £4.95 or how about “Mr Micawber’s All Day Breakfast Meals” their Big Breakfast is £4.95 including tea or coffee.

Inside is small & cosy with only about half-a-dozen tables. The walls are covered with paintings relating to Charles Dickens himself, & as you probably already gathered the menu also pays tribute to one our most famous writers!

A friendly waitress approached us & we ordered some drinks from the “Mr Pickwick’s Cold Drinks” section, a Lemonade at £1.30 & a Mineral water at £1.20. “Martin Chuzzlewit Hot Drinks” are also available & I was delighted to see that the tea was served in proper cups & saucers!

Feeling peckish we took another look at the menu, chose a “Tiny Tim Toasted Sandwich” both ham & Cheese. The Ham was off the bone & obviously a good cheddar was used, absolutely delicious! This was served with a salad which was probably than those served in top restaurants, not your usual soggy lettuce & tomato, this was crisp lettuce, tomato wedges, cucumber, sweetcorn, cress, grapes, strawberries & topped with a slice of orange!

Dickens of a Tea Shoppe obviously has its regulars, but us strangers were given an equally warm welcome. Next time you’re in Penkridge or even just passing through, pop in for a cuppa or treat yourself to a cream tea from “Oliver Twists Tea Corner”. Love that menu!!
